When it was dedicated in 1886, the Statue of Liberty instantly stood as a beacon to all those who held on to hope and believed that better things awaited them in America. To this day, Lady Liberty can conjure a sense of awe in all who lay eyes upon her, and after more than a century she remains a popular attraction among visitors. The ferry trip out to Liberty Island is almost as exciting as a tour of the statue itself.

From the windswept deck, you can stare out into the misty waters, taking in the sights of the city and the vastness of the ocean beyond. Once you alight on the island, you can take several different ranger-guided tours.

The statue was designed by a young French sculptor, Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, who was striving to build a statue like the great Colossus that once stood at the Greek island Rhodos.
The statue’s face was modeled after his mother’s and the story goes that the body was modeled after a prostitute. The steel framework was made by Gustave Eiffel, Statue of Liberty under construction, Musee Carnavalet, Pariswho also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
