The Roman Colosseum is also known as the Flavian amphitheatre. This earlier name is derived from the essence of the Flavian rulers, who had taken the responsibility of building this large architecture. It has confounded the imagination of millions of people for innumerable years. This art piece is located on marshy land in between the Caelian Hills and the Esquiline. The construction of this gigantic structure ended in 80 A.D. Titus inaugurated it and the Domitian completed the eventual architecture.
Roman Colosseum is saluted as the first ever permanent form of amphitheatre ever constructed in Rome. Cut stone and masonry are the prized ornamentation of this architecture. Its style has an amalgamation of Doric, Ionic, Roman and Corinthian culture.
More than 50,000 spectators can be adjusted in the colosseum. In order to have organized entry and exit of the crowd, there are around eighty gates. The designing of vast eclipse has been portrayed and materialized very dexterously in this coliseum. In order to keep the wild and dangerous beasts, there are several compact passageways and rooms in the Colosseum. Even the challenging display of spectacles was carried out flawlessly in the spheres of this large amphitheatre.
Animal hunts, sea battles, dramas, re-enactments and executions were previously held in the Roman Colosseum. In the initial medieval era, this art piece was more focused for entertainment purposes. Later, it was utilized for quarry, fortress, workshops and Christian shrines. Unfortunately, stone robbers and earthquakes have ruined the beauty of the coliseum. Presently, it stands to be an iconic souvenir reflecting the essence of the imperial rule in Rome. Even now, every good Friday, a torchlit for the “Way of procession” is done by the priest.
Roman Colosseum has emerged as one of the most crowd pulling tourist destinations of Rome. You should not miss its sight after stepping foot in the country.
