Eiffel Tower : World’s Most Visited Paid Monument
Filed under France
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable structures around the world and has been a global icon of France. It is an iron tower built on Champ de Mars and is located beside the River Seine in Paris.
The Eiffel Tower was named after Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and is the tallest building located in Paris . Since 1889 (the year of its construction), over 200,000,000 people have visited the tower. This figure includes 6,719,200 only in 2006 and has made the tower as the world’s most visited paid monument.
The tower is 1,063 ft high, which includes a 79 ft antenna and can be considered equivalent to 81 levels of a conventional building. It was the tallest tower ever since it’s construction until 1930 and is presently the fifth tallest structure in the whole of France.
Eiffel Tower has a metal structure that weighs 7,300 tonnes. The entire structure has many non-metal components approximately weighing 10,000 tonnes. The top of this tower shifts away from the sun by nearly 18 cm depending upon the ambient temperature because of thermal expansion. The tower is also known to be swaying 6-7 cm by the wind.
The first and the second levels of the tower are accessible by both lifts and staircases. There is a ticket booth located at the south tower base, which sells tickets to access stairs beginning at that location. Three different colours of paint have been used on the tower, so that the observer gets a uniform appearance while viewing from the ground. Eiffel tower has also two restaurants namely Altitude 95 located 311 ft above sea level and Jules Verne, which is an expensive restaurant situated on the second floor. Jules Verne even has a one star rating in the Michelin Red Guide.
If you’ve been to Paris and not have not visited the Eiffel Tower, you have surely missed the experience of a lifetime.
