Pantheon is a Greek word and means “to honor all Gods.” It is the most complete structure of Rome ever built on earth and has survived 2 millenniums of pillage, plunder and invasion. The sight was originally a rectangular temple, which was built by Marcus Agrippa in 25 century B.C. and later Hadrian had rebuilt it in 118 to 125 A.D. Today, visitors see a structure, which is radically different from the original one. However, the Portico in the front stands as remains of the original temple. Tombs of Rafael are also contained here.
The giant dome dominating the interior is 142 meters in diameter and no other masonry dome is as large as the Pantheon’s. There is perfect harmony in its architecture, which is established by the fact that the diameter of the dome is equal to the distance from the top to the floor. Coffers and Adytons reduce its weight. Towards the oculus, the dome becomes comparatively thin. The thickness at the top is just 1.2 meters. The columns, which support the portico, weigh about 60 tons.
To save the building from pillage, it was converted into a church. Phocas, the Byzantine emperor made a donation to Pope Boniface IV in the form of this structure. On special occasions, masses are held.
Visiting the interior of the Pantheon in the day and return by early evening is the best idea. The Piazza Della Rotunda is a beautiful square, which is filled with bars, cafes and restaurants. The Piazza becomes very lively on warm nights when there glows the beautiful light, which acts as a reminder of the splendor of ancient Rome. The area near the fountain is always crowded, so tourists flock to the expensive bars, which include Bar San Calisto, Freni e Frizioni and La Mansion.
